Measurement's

Hello,

Just a quick one, when using recipes sometimes they state 1 teaspoon, 2 tablespoon etc, I was just wondering if 1 teaspoon meant heaped or level??

It usually means level. Otherwise it says full/heaped/rounded.

its usually a rough guide anyway as herbs and spices tend to be different strengths depending on how old, how they are stored, where they were bought, type etc...

most modern spoon designs hold nowhere near what they describe. There are inexpensive measures which take the guesswork out of it. I doubt if many (if any) recipes test for ruggedness of ingredient measures, and as Steve alludes to, there are other variables which might affect the measurement, anyway.

You're right about spoons rarely being their 'standard' size; that's why we have an excellent set of measuring cups.

Most important thing is to use the same spoon throughout the recipe so everything is at least in proportion!

I do have a set of measuring cups and spoons though (pretty essential when baking) but I also find the edge of the spoons are excellent for scraping the white membrane from chilli and pepper skins.
